<p>Every week I meet managers and leaders who don&#8217;t get this point AT ALL. They talk about expectations and accountability and results and change and that is all very good and important. What I rarely hear, is leaders talking about how they excite, create meaning, or help people think &#8220;we.&#8221;  I can&#8217;t remember ever hearing a leader talk about their interest in creating a joyful and fulfilling workplace. Ironically, focusing on how people feel about their work is a highly efficient way to improve ownership and results.</p>
<p>Many organizations use &#8220;Results Orientation&#8221; as a core competency. Let&#8217;s start describing it fully &#8211; not just focusing on the importance of accountability and measurements, but also how culture, passion, and challenge impact results.</p>

<p>BendBroadband is perceived as an innovation pioneer in a mature, increasingly regulated, volatile telecommunications field. In that spirit of innovation, Amy and her team took a bold step last September and re branded the company in a way unlike any other regional provider has done.</p>
<p>In the days of yore, BendBroadband held &#8220;top dog&#8221; status as a monopolistic cable services provider. Things have certainly changed.  First, The FCC doesn’t make it easy to stay there.  Industry executives fear that they are looking for ways to further <a title="Reuters article about FCC" href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1221604220100513" target="_blank">regulate their space and impede innovation</a>.  This has caused some sector downgrades by analysts.</p>
<p>Second, <a title="LA Times Google article" href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2010/02/google-plans-to-offer-broadband-service.html" target="_blank">Google is trying to steal market share by building fiber networks in rural areas across the country</a>. Finally, competitors boast much larger ad budgets. BendBroadband also competes with nationally known satellite companies such as Dish Networks. (Did I already mention Google has entered this space?).</p>
<p>The industry is changing so rapidly that many companies&#8211;including BendBroadband&#8211;consider themselves operating in different sectors, ranging from telecommunications to IT services to cable television.</p>
<p>It would have been much easier to compete on price and hold on to their market share for dear life. Or position the company for a fire sale.  That’s what many companies do when faced with competitive behemoths. Amy chose a more courageous option.</p>

In today’s volatile economy, foresight and planning are easily pushed aside in favor of reactively averting poisonous arrows and perilous moats. </strong>Those hazards continuously threaten us—and often appear from a surprise enemy. How many of us keep putting our foot on the gas and have not slowed down to finesse these dangerous conditions?</p>

<p>We may not be able to control unforeseen events and demanding clients. What we can control is how we respond. It starts with arming ourselves with knowledge and confidence.<br />
Knowledge begins by understanding the most common pressures our clients are facing:<span id="more-3738"></span></p>
<p>1. <strong>Information overload is pushing clients closer to “overwhelm” than ever before</strong>. They crave simplicity, and will pay handsomely for it. According to sales expert <a title="SNAP Selling" href="http://www.amazon.com/SNAP-Selling-Business-Frazzled-Customers/dp/1591843308/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1277183220&amp;sr=1-1" target="_blank">Jill Konrath, author of SNAP Selling</a>, “If you do not offer a quick, easy way for clients to work with you and demonstrate your value, one of three things will happen: they either a) delete your messages, b) delay getting back to you or c) disappear into a black hole.”</p>
<p>2. <strong>Larger organizations continue to reduce suppliers.</strong>In many services and knowledge businesses, such as training, coaching, software, logistics, and IT services, the purchasing power has shifted from functional areas to the procurement department.  Dynamics have shifted from a relationship orientation to a transaction orientation. Suddenly the purchasing department is your gatekeeper, forcing you into cost reduction conversations.  Beverly Heinritz, Vice President of Customer Service and Support at <a title="Rearden Commerce" href="http://www.reardencommerce.com" target="_blank">Rearden Commerce</a>, this has generated longer sales cycles.  Rearden Commerce provides a network platform that connects mobile professionals with over 160,000 suppliers.  Today, even these innovative companies can demonstrate immediate ROI yet still face these roadblocks.</p>
<p>3.<strong> Leaders continue to struggle to do more with less.</strong> In spite of the number of recovery indicators, massive currency fluctuations, tighter credit, and the increased cost of labor and materials has limited how much organic growth many B2B companies can pursue. This forces even high-end brands to provide lower-priced services to cost-obsessed customers.<br />
How do you protect yourself from these challenging dynamics? Build your defenses by looking first at the gaps in your own company, and how you can eliminate them.<br />
It might be easier than you think.  After working with hundreds of entrepreneurs and dozens of Fortune 500 companies, I discovered that only two major gaps stop most companies from reaching their true potential. Thankfully, both are within your control to address:</p>
<p>1. <em>Lack of a practical, easy to understand growth plan</em>.  You will notice I did not suggest you develop a strategic plan. This is overkill for most small to medium companies.</p>
<p>Most companies develop plans from the INSIDE OUT. In other words, they focus too much of their time on financials, operations, core values, mission statements, and ‘what if’ scenarios. During turbulent times, your finance and operations teams can be your best friends.  But if you forget to re-focus on your clients during the recovery, they may also forget YOU.</p>
<p>Take a different approach. Start planning from the OUTSIDE IN. Look first at market dynamics, such as:</p>
<p>• The strategic market imperatives (internal and external pressures that are forcing your clients to change) – these may include pressure to reduce error rates, improving internal compliance, streamlining time to market, or positioning the company for eventual sale.</p>
<p>• The consequences and impact on the client if they do not address these imperatives—how will management be affected? Their employees? Their competitive positioning? Their ability to innovate?</p>
<p>• The Ultimate Result and Unique Value Factor—Shine a light on your “UR-UV.” Identify how clearly you understand your client’s needs, issues, and frustrations. What makes your company stand out in their mind? How do you make their businesses and lives better?</p>
<p>• Your Ideal client. After you have identified your company’s unique attributes, review the traits of your ideal client. Instead of focusing first on the demographics, analyze their behavior. This may include their decision-making style, commonly shared values, culture, and innovation philosophy.</p>
<p>2. <em>Letting “the Beast” in your company run wild, and lacking a system to tame it.<br />
</em>The Beast is a whimsical yet pungent metaphor for your limiting beliefs. Author and change catalyst Daryl Conner, author of “<a title="Daryl Conner " href="http://www.amazon.com/Managing-Speed-Change-Daryl-Conner/dp/0679406840/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1277183342&amp;sr=1-1" target="_blank">Managing at the Speed of Change</a>,” once said “The Beast takes dreams and turns them into nightmares.” He is right. They can kill a perfectly good growth plan and winning strategy in a heartbeat.</p>
<p>The Beast is sneaky. It expresses itself during meetings and private conversation. You may recognize these common Beast remarks:</p>
<ul>
<li><em>“I’m a banker, not a marketer.</em></li>
<li><em>I don’t have time to focus; I am too busy.</em></li>
<li><em>Let me explain why that won’t work…</em></li>
<li><em>Planning is expensive and time-consuming.</em></li>
<li><em>If I focus my market too much, I will miss out on new opportunities as they arise.”</em></li>
</ul>
<p>Charlie, the CEO of a global engineering firm, took nearly ten years to identify the Beast in his organization.  In his company, his lead engineer Bill was channeling the Beast. He repeatedly told co-workers “here we go again…another change initiative. This too shall pass.” Charlie’s new initiatives were repeatedly sabotaged.</p>
<p>We asked a series of revealing questions to help this client manage the Beast. In the end, they felt more committed to their key priorities and more confident about their business strategy.  Team members became more open during weekly meetings.  Bill chose early retirement.  Within just 12 months, their collections improved by 50%, profitability was restored, and they were featured in Inc. Magazine.</p>

His death was very unexpected. He was only 48 years old and we were all shocked to hear the news.</p>
<p>I had spent time with him on a few different occasions, but I never really got to know him. Today, I attended his funeral and I learned a lot about the mark he made in the world.</p>
<p><strong>Ordinary Lives</strong></p>
<p>He was really just an ordinary guy, just like you and me, just like everyone for that matter. Nothing he did could be considered world changing, yet he regularly changed the world of the people around him. He came from a very large family and many of them spoke about his charitable nature.<span id="more-3503"></span></p>
<p>He really didn&#8217;t have very much, but he always gave them something. Sometimes it was the gift of time, other times it was just a simple piece of candy. They all knew that if they needed something, he would be there to help.</p>
<p><strong>Our Legacy</strong></p>
<p>The funeral experience got me thinking again about the legacy we each live behind. For whatever reason, many of us believe that our legacy is connected to the greatness we achieve. This sad belief is fostered by our society&#8217;s value that the highest achievements in life are usually the most difficult, and therefore may only be achieved by a select few. The higher the standard, the fewer there are that can reach it. That&#8217;s what makes doing it so cool.</p>
<p>This idea contributes to the false belief that what we do really matters. Here is why I think it is a false belief. Can you name the top musicians, actors, politicians, ministers, athletes, public speakers or any other category of fame from 100 years ago without googling it? How about the criminals, schmucks, dirtbags and/or villians of the same time period? Most of us would answer no, to these two questions &#8211; and that is precisely my point. Very few of the things that we value as a society are really the things that matter.</p>
<p><strong>Point of Impact</strong></p>

<p>Driving through the grave yard today reminded me that we are only here temporarily and none of us will get out alive. Too often we take ourselves and life too seriously. It is meant to be fun and full of joy. If it is anything else for you, then it is time to let go and . . .</p>

<blockquote><p>I have likened my role as [strategy] coach to the drop of water on the lily leaf. The water droplet has a distinct identity, and at the same time it is part of the leaf. A strategy coach must be self-aware enough that he or she can maintain a distinct identity while fully engaged at an intellectual level. The coach succeeds by seeing the client succeed while never putting his or her personality ahead of the players.</p></blockquote>
<p>Our thoughts and condolences are with his family. His life and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=Prahalad&amp;x=0&amp;y=0">work</a> should be celebrated.</p>

<p>World-renowned management thinker Dr. Coimbatore Krishnarao (CK) Prahalad passed away on April 16, 2010 in San Diego, CA.  He was 68.  Prahalad was Distinguished University Professor of Corporate Strategy and taught at the University of Michigan since 1977.  A prolific author, Prahalad contributed to fundamental business concepts such as strategic intent, core competence, and co-creation arising from his work with multinational companies.  His most ambitious work, the Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid, outlined a model for large firms to engage with the poor.  The recipient of many honors and awards, Prahalad’s most recent accolades included a 2009 Padma Bhushan, one of India’ highest civilian honors, and he was voted the world’s leading Management Thinker by Thinkers50 in 2009.  He is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Gayatri, his children, Murali Krishna and Deepa, their spouses and three grandchildren.  Communications are welcome at <a href="prahalad.family@gmail.com">prahalad.family@gmail.com</a></p>

Most stick to the usual top business measures like profitability, quality, and marketshare and these are critical. But they are not sufficient because the impact leaders have &#8211; and leadership teams have, in particular  &#8211; is immense. Are you building an organization that is agile? Likely to remain union free? The senior team makes a big difference.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what I would recommend including in a good definition of success for leadership teams:<span id="more-3330"></span></p>
<ul>
<li>Strategic implementation – The extent the organization’s goals and intentions are brought to fruition and the efficiency with which they do this.</li>
<li>Growing the business – whether the team moves the organization forward in terms of invocation, growth, and expansion of capabilities. Whether nagging issues and threats are reduced and opportunities are seized and acted upon.</li>
<li>Success of decisions – individually and over time, quality of reflection (number one indicators of decision accuracy and success is reflection and learning from previous decisions)</li>
<li>Create and propagation of mission, vision and a rolling strategic plan (it is not enough to create a strategy and a list of values – these are tools for their ongoing leadership practices)</li>
<li>Remove barriers and enable the management team (enabling strategic implementation)</li>
<li>Define the ideal culture (updated regularly) and build and align organization practices to reinforce the ideal culture</li>
<li>Define and model excellence (with behavioral detail and granularity); model the way for all professionals, especially middle management.</li>
<li>Build leadership and managerial talent – create and use bench strength analysis and succession plans for key positions and personnel</li>
<li>Build relationships and their leadership team’s reputation within the organization and with key stakeholders</li>
<li>Intra-team coaching, mentoring, collaboration – team members help each other get better</li>
<li>Build organizational agility – within the leadership team and throughout the organization</li>
<li>The extent to which the members of the leadership team are accountability to each other (co-management, and co-ownership of organizational success and health). Part of this measure includes broadening team member perspectives and capabilities and may involve project-based or job rotations.</li>
</ul>
<p>What do you think? There is a lot here and probably too many things to focus on. Are there three or four indicators that would make a difference in helping your team having a greater impact on your organization?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-3326" href="http://unboundideas.com/2010/spring-cleaning/goodbye1/"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-3326" src="http://unboundideas.com/coach/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/goodbye1-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a>I often find myself associating, on either a professional or personal level, with people who see the world much differently than I do. I enjoy these relationships, because they help me understand things that I might normally reject. I love being with people who know how to share their own view points without disrespecting those that are held by others. It makes it possible for us to talk about things that are normally deemed too delicate or sensitive to discuss.</p>
<p>These relationships seem to lead more often to friendships that are truly capable of lifting and supporting each other. We don&#8217;t go around trying to tear each other down. The competition we feel is healthy. It doesn&#8217;t matter if our agendas are similar or contrary. Because we respect each other, we are able to stand up and cheer each other on.<span id="more-3324"></span></p>
<p><strong>Toxic Friends</strong></p>
<p>Sadly, not all relationships are like this. Some friends are toxic. I have invested in many friendships that I knew would never become healthy friendships. I held to a belief that if I loved enough, the other person would learn to love me too. Sometimes, it just doesn&#8217;t work. I have learned the hard way, on more than one occasion, that it really is easier to end these relationships than it is to hang on to them and hope that they will somehow mature.</p>
<p>Of course there is pain associated with ending a toxic relationship, but it is a lot less than that associated with maintaining one. I find it interesting that these types of friends spend most of their time belittling and tearing the other down, then strongly protest when an attempt is made to end the relationship. I always wonder, &#8220;why do they want to be my friend? They don&#8217;t support me or value me.&#8221; I don&#8217;t understand all the reasons behind it, but I know that toxic friends hate being cut off.</p>
<p><strong>Time To Clean Up</strong></p>
<p>I am ending several relationships like this right now. Some of these people have been my friend for a long time. Some are very close to me, but I am tired of the abuse that is required to be their friend. I am certain, that I am not the ideal friend for these people either, so I am hopeful that we can make a clean break without a lot of drama.</p>
<p>I feel like I can love and support these people better by stepping away. I think even the best of friendships eventually reach a point where separate paths become more desirable, so I am ending these relationships with the thought in mind that it is time to go our separate ways.</p>
<p>I feel a little guilt for doing this, but I know that it is for the best. I know that I need to let these relationships go, because they are occupying too much of my time, and taking too much of my energy. I need to make room for the many wonderful relationships that are waiting to take me to the next level.</p>
<p>I am saying goodbye while I still hold some form of goodwill toward the other. This will allow me to fondly remember the good times we may have shared. If I wait much longer, I am sure there will be a blow-up. I choose to avoid that, by simply saying farewell.</p>
<p><strong>Moving On</strong></p>
<p>Some will find this hard to understand. Some will be hurt, some will become bitter and others will feel a sense of relief. I hope they will eventually understand that it is just time to move on, and that moving on will create new opportunities for both of us to grow.</p>
<ul>

<li><strong>Do you know which ones are breathing life into your dreams and which ones are not?</strong></li>
<li><strong>What steps are you willing to take to make room for new healthy relationships?</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>As I move forward, I am conscious of the lessons I have learned. I recognized early on, that some of these friendships would never develop into healthy relationships, but I allowed them to develop because I needed something or wanted something that I thought I could get. In this way, I added to the toxicity and the drama,and for that, I am sorry.</p>
<p>I am reminded of a quote from Maya Angelou that one of my most precious friends shared with me. She said, &#8220;when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.&#8221;  I will use that to guide the establishment of my new friendships. I hope you will too.</p>

In response to questions by Barb Berggoetz of the Indianapolis Star, Madeline Albright (former ambassador to the United Nations and secretary of state under President Clinton) spoke of her career as “very zig-zaggy”.  Ms. Albright spoke Wednesday (March 24, 2010) at Butler University in Indianapolis as the closing speaker for the 2009-2010 Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series.</p>
<p>Ms. Berggoetz’s Q&amp;A began by asking Ms. Albright what she would be speaking about.  Her response was, “First of all, I think, I’m always asked to talk about my life.  I try to make it something that shows some lessons of moving from here to there and opportunities one has to take and the choices one has as a woman.  I’ll speak of the importance of women’s leadership.”  <span id="more-3185"></span></p>
<p>Ms. Berggoetz goes on to ask, “What advice can you give women who want to become political power brokers?”</p>
<p>Madeline Albright’s response, I believe, was applicable to all women whether they hold political ambitions or not.  She stated that, “First of all, they need to be very well-informed.  You can’t operate on the basis of smoke and mirrors.   You have to really know what you’re talking about.  Once you do, women have to learn to interrupt in meetings or just generally to voice their opinions.  To do that, you have to also be willing to debate the issues.</p>
<p>I also think they need to realize there are many advantages to being a woman, one being based on biology.  Our life does come in segments and allows for fulfillment in different phases…As young women make their choices, they should not close the door on various options.  My personal career was very zig-zaggy.  It obviously never occurred to me that I’d be secretary of state. <p>The truth is that women’s careers are often “zig-zaggy”.  There is a benefit to both ourselves and our communities in these “zig-zaggy” careers which we tend to overlook.  Our natural feminine mental flexibility and long-term thinking attributes are especially useful in creating a life that is open to new ideas, opportunities and directions.  We are able through our imagination and vision to pull together our different experiences into a workable, forward-moving direction.  We are pre-disposed to move in a direction that makes a difference through contribution and connection.</p>
<p>Women’s leadership is of great importance in today’s world.  We need the feminine attributes, including collaboration, peacemaking, and interconnectedness to heal our world.  Enjoy fulfillment at the next zigzag in your road. He said, &#8220;Andrew, you seem to always be about being your best and super positive with your head lifted up to the sky. It&#8217;s inspirational and motivating. but i wonder, do you ever just be? with absolutely no drive to do?&#8221;</p>
<p>This question, caused me to wonder about the formula for being and several questions began to enter my mind. What does it mean to be? What is the role of doing in that formula? How are doing and being related? Is there any relation at all?</p>
<p>It didn&#8217;t take me long to realize that it is possible to do, without being, but I do not believe that it is possible to become, or to be, without doing something. Are you with me on that?<span id="more-3109"></span></p>
<h2>Permission To Soar In Ascending Spirals</h2>
<p>This is actually a conversation that I have had with myself many times and it represents the vision of my work. I believe that achievement, the result of our doing, by itself is worth very little. If we spend our life achieving and doing, we will never be filled. We will simply move from one quest to another without ever gaining any sense of satisfaction. That said, we can&#8217;t just throw away any and all forms of doing in pursuit to be. In all reality, we must be anxiously engaged in many good causes.</p>
<p>Buddha taught this lesson beautifully. He began his journey to enlightenment by sitting under a Bodhi tree. He believed that if he denied himself all his privileges and desires and sat under that tree suffering all manners of affliction, he would soon suffer his way to an enlightened state of being. It didn&#8217;t take him long to discover that that was not the way. He realized that the true path required both active (doing) and passive (being) activities.</p>
<p>The journey to being begins with a careful clarification of what it is that we value. Our values, must then influence our dreams and aspirations. Our dreams and aspirations, must then guide the things we do. Aligning all that we do, with what we wish to become puts us in a state of balance and we are then free to soar in ascending spirals. This is important, WE GIVE OURSELVES PERMISSION TO DO THAT!</p>
<h2>Living The Commitments That Accelerate Growth</h2>
<p>What we do, determines our ability to grow and to be. Paul, taught us this lesson in a letter he wrote to the early Christian community that was living in the Roman Province of Galatia. He warned them to be very careful about how they spent their time by saying, &#8220;Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.&#8221; Hence, our version, you reap what you sow, was born.</p>
<p>If you really want to &#8220;BE&#8221; something, you must be willing to live the commitments that are associated with that quality or behavior. You can&#8217;t smoke and be a &#8220;non-smoker&#8221;. It takes effort to be, and that effort translates into doing. Do you see the natural connection?</p>
<p>Arya was asking about the relationship between doing and being, but I believe he was also asking about the place of rest and meditation. Is it necessary to be doing something all the time? The answer of course is yes, but you are the one responsible for choosing your activity.</p>
<p>My perfect day includes a lot of time to meditate, pray, study, and ponder. I like to be alone in my thoughts. It is how I reinvent myself. It is how I recharge my batteries. When I give those activities up for the pursuit of others, I find myself out of balance. These are the things that I am willing to commit to, and they work for me. You may find your energy in totally different places doing totally different activities. The key is deciding what commitments we are willing to make and then sticking with them.</p>
<p>This, is where the balanced feeling of being comes from. When our dreams are aligned with our commitments, we create harmony. Life begins to feel like, and appear as if, we are running on auto-pilot. Growth is accelerated, and we are ready to become.</p>
<h2>Standing Whole and Ready To Lead With Purpose</h2>
<p>But alignment is not enough. Your light, the essence of your being, will never reach its full potential until you learn to shine brightly. It is only when we learn to radiate the vision of who we are to the world, that we begin to lead with purpose.</p>
<p>Leadership &#8211; that is the purpose of becoming. The greatest work we will ever do is to lift another to a new level. It is the most fulfilling and satisfying experience. It is the essence of being. When we become our best, we see for the first time that there is room for everyone to be their best.</p>
<p>Arriving at this gateway to enlightenment strips us of all forms of toxic competition. We learn to cheer others on without any worry that they will somehow surpass us. We are inspired by their efforts. We feel a desire to be better for our own account, because we see that there is so much potential that is yet to be realized. We see so very clearly that we are all connected and that we are all one.</p>
<p>Life moves fluidly. The doing that we do appears to happen without any effort. From the outside to the inside, we are filled with peace. We know who we are and we are being that person. The struggle to do, is no longer found within us. We simply live on purpose and we lead that way too.</p>
<p><strong>Have you identified your aspirations? </strong></p>
<p><strong>Are you willing to live the commitments that are necessary for their realization?</strong></p>
<p><strong>What are you doing with your light? Are you willing to shine brightly?</strong></p>
<p>I don&#8217;t have all the answers, but I know that I am anxiously engaged in becoming my best. I understand where balance comes from and what it takes to get it. I want you to create harmony in your own life and leadership responsibilities because I know it will bring you great joy. Please do me a favor today. Take a moment to write down what you value most in life. Then examine how you are spending your time. Then take a step, no matter how small toward balancing the ledger. You are now free to move about the cabin!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-3039" href="http://unboundideas.com/2010/when-a-mighty-tree-falls/img_1174/"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-3039" src="http://unboundideas.com/coach/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/IMG_1174-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" /></a>Yesterday, my sister-in-law and her husband, decided to remove a liquidambar styraciflua tree from her backyard. This tree, commonly referred to as the  American Sweetgum, is known for its beautiful leaves and fall colors. This particular specimen was fairly large, and I was surprised that they were removing it. I could tell that it provided good shade for the house and so I inquired about the purpose for its demise.</p>
<p><strong>Ankle Breakers</strong></p>
<p>While the tree is known for its beauty, it is also known for its spiked fruit. These &#8220;gumball&#8221; shaped droppings are very unpleasant to walk on, and they do not decompose. If left on the lawn, they turn it into an uneven surface full of lumpy pock marks. Here in North Carolina, they call the the fruit &#8220;ankle breakers&#8221; because both the fruit, and the holes they create in the lawn, are known to cause many ankle injuries.</p>
<p>As a newcomer, it was hard for me to understand why this tree was being removed.<span id="more-3038"></span> It looked like a beautiful tree. The decision to eliminate it, was not made in haste. Its removal had been considered for many year and it was finally time to create a new landscape plan. Its seasonal beauty and the shade it provided could no longer save it. The mess it regularly makes had finally sealed its doom.</p>
<p><strong>Character Reveals Itself Over Time</strong></p>

<p>I foster a &#8220;strength based approach&#8221; in all of the work that I do, but I also make sure we take enough time to identify and eliminate any critical behaviors that can potentially derail a career. These characteristics are usually seen by all, but rarely addressed until it is too late. It is my job to discuss these unspeakable blemishes in such away that the needed growth is understood, accepted and embraced.</p>
<p>No one can really expect to hide these types of behaviors for very long. They are always revealed in time. The only way to deal with these challenges is to grow beyond them. That requires constant effort. I like to help people learn what they can do, instead of what they must stop doing, but sometimes they just need to stop doing certain things or they will continue to face similar consequences.</p>
<p><strong>Leveraging the Perspectives of Others</strong></p>
<p>I realize that it is difficult to see our own &#8220;fatal flaws&#8221; and that is why we must encourage others to tell us the truth about our behavior. Sometimes those around us don&#8217;t tell us the truth because they don&#8217;t want to hurt us, but the only way the truth can hurt us is when it is withheld from us or covered up. Plain and simple, we need to know if there is a problem.</p>
<p>Other times, the truth is spoken and we refuse to hear it. We tell ourselves that the person that is speaking it does not really believe what they are saying, or we argue that their perspective is not valid. The person trying to tell us the truth eventually loses interest and leaves us alone until we self-destruct.</p>
<p>If we want to thrive, we must be willing to listen to the spoken and unspoken feedback we receive from others. If we fail to do that, we will be cut down. It is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Are you taking the time to hear and understand the feedback you are receiving?</strong></li>
<li><strong>Do you look for ways to uncover the unspeakable?</strong></li>
<li><strong>What are you doing to encourage others to tell you the truth?</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>We cannot ignore the truth for very long. If we do, we will find ourselves in undesirable circumstances. Growth is much easier to accomplish when we see it ourselves. Don&#8217;t wait for somebody to tell you that you need to do it. Take care of your personal &#8220;ankle breakers&#8221; today.</p>

These groups have invested their resources and total faith in women to rebuild their communities as they know that women will use their opportunities to feed their families and strengthen their communities.</p>
<p>Relationship building, networking and community building are some of women’s finest gifts. Therefore, The Essential Feminine Company™ is opening its “Living Room” as a place for women to get together once a month to share ideas and suggestions about various topics. <p>We will begin our Living Room discussion with the topic, “Inviting The New, The Different and The Good Into Our Lives”. Separateness and superiority have become our way of life, rooted deeply in fear.  A question&#8211; is our way of living necessarily &#8220;right&#8221;?  Many aspects of American life are unraveling before our very eyes (such as, the ability to live and lead from truth and the ability to care for the whole, our health care system, our economic foundation). I wonder who are we to put forth our superiority?  Collective responsibility expressed through empathy and understanding would benefit us all.  Therefore, one of the most important things we need in the world today is for each of us to have a sense of what it is like to walk in the shoes of another. <span id="more-3013"></span></p>
<p>In order for our collective responsibility to change, we must change on a personal level.  Attempting to change collective responsibility will fail, as it is a symptom and not the disease.  For true change, we must accept our personal responsibility to move beyond fear, selfishness and superiority to a place of deep understanding and care for the benefit of all.  Women are particularly needed to lead this new way of living/leading because we who give birth, by our very nature hold the potential for compassion for all (the whole).  It is my wish that women step forward today and take a greater lead in where our collective (world) is headed.  It is my passion to help that to happen.</p>

If we apply these basic attribute to what the world currently needs they work hand in glove. The needs of the world include greater equity, more understanding, less fear of the other, and overall more inclusion. Who would be better suited than a women to integrate these into the decision of the world.  <span id="more-2666"></span>If we are courageous enough to believe that our natural gifts are now being called on and we are wise enough to place them in places where we ourselves would enjoy leading, the combination would make a historical impact that the world has not seen. We must live in fear of the next shoe dropping.  If we are co-creators, we may not always see the whole picture but we can take the steps necessary to create lives that are unlimited, meaningful and happy.  <span id="more-2577"></span></p>
<p>The first step we can take towards achieving the life we desire is to step back from our victim and assume we are creating our lives and if we don’t like what we’ve created we can change it.  Then we can begin to take charge and consider our goals.  This is an important step, since it is difficult to take a journey if you don’t know where you are going.  If our goal is aligned with hope and the highest possible good, we cannot fail.<br />
When we know our goal in life we can begin to ask ourselves where our greatest roadblock lies.  We can look at our problems as challenges to our understanding.  Remember we are co-creators.
